Makalu (8,463) is the fifth highest mountain in the world located 14 miles east of Mount Everest. Its size alone is impressive, but its summit with knife-edged ridges makes necessary to use mixed rock and ice climbing techniques. Only some 300+ climbers have even attempted this peak, versus other 8,000 meter peaks in Nepal. This being said, Makalu is all the more spectacular and challenging climbs of the 8,000-meter peaks. The Makalu Expedition has four base camps, including camp 3 on the Makalu La at 7,400m and a high camp on the North Face at approximately 7,800m.
