Experience the natural beauty, cultural immersion, and physical challenge of the 5 days Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek from Pokhara—it's a must-do for any adventure seeker. As you ascend, the stunning view of the imposing peaks in the Annapurna region, including Machapuchare, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna I, will mesmerise you. The constantly changing scenery, which ranges from lush rhododendron forests to mountain pastures, provides a sensory extravaganza.

We offer various trekking packages, including the Ghorepani ABC Trek, Mardi Himal with ABC, and the standard Annapurna Base Camp Trek with a Kathmandu heritage sightseeing tour. However, recognising the demand for a shorter and more efficient route, we've designed a customised 5-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek from Pokhara. This itinerary covers the same highlights as the standard trek up to Chhomrong village and returns via the same route to Pokhara. While the daily walking hours and distance may be longer compared to the standard package, the primary objective is to reach Annapurna Base Camp within a shorter timeframe.

Engaging with the amiable Gurung and Magar populations along the route will provide you with insight into their rituals, traditions, and way of life. Enjoy the friendly welcome of the Nepalese while touring rural villages and taking part in customs. The surrounding landscape, which includes imposing mountains and dense forests, makes this natural haven even more tranquil.

There is a wide variety of plants and animals that you can see while hiking in the Annapurna Conservation Area. Aim high for the elusive Himalayan tahr, vibrant rhododendron flowers, and cute pika. The chance to observe the biodiversity of this unspoiled environment will excite nature lovers and animal aficionados. Many different types of adventure seekers can hike to Annapurna Base Camp from Pokhara, as it is appropriate for seasoned hikers. The short ABC hike is physically demanding, but the benefits much exceed the difficulties. Reaching the base camp leaves you with a very memorable sense of accomplishment.

For those looking for an incredible Himalayan adventure, the Annapurna Base Camp trek is a must-do because of its breathtaking landscape, opportunities to engage with local cultures, and difficult but rewarding journey.

Guide's suggestions

The short 5-day Pokhara ABC Trek is suitable for adventure enthusiasts aged 10 and above. While previous trekking experience is not mandatory, it is recommended. Participants should be physically fit and able to cover 8 to 14 km daily without difficulty. Additionally, you should be able to carry a backpack weighing between 3 and 5 kg, which contains water and personal belongings.

5-Day ABC Trek Itinerary from Pokhara

  • Day 1: Drive to Matque or Samrung trek to Chhomrong (2170 m). 3-4 hours' walk.
  • Day 2: Chhomrong Trek to Himalaya, 2900 m. 7-hour trek
  • Day 3: Trek from Himalaya to ABC (4130 m) via Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3700 m), a 7-hour trek
  • Day 4: Trek from Annapurna Base Camp to Sinuwa (2340 m). 7- to 8-hour trek
  • Day 5: Trek to Samrung or Matque and Drive to Pokhara (822 m). In total, 7-8 hours.

Best Time for ABC Trek From Pokhara

The best times for trekking to Annapurna Base Camp are autumn (September-November) and spring (March-May) due to favourable weather conditions. These seasons offer clear skies, moderate temperatures, and stunning landscapes. Avoid winter and monsoon seasons due to unpredictable weather. Keep in mind that the monsoon and winter ABC trek from Pokhara is possible, but the winter season, due to the heavy snowfall reaching Annapurna Base Camp, may not be possible or easy. Talking about the monsoon is not as bad as you have imagined; we have organised many monsoon treks for nature and greenery lovers. Imagine the clear weather after the rain, the stunning white snowy peaks, and the green grassland with beautiful flowers.

Difficulties During the Short ABC Trek

Surely this shortest Annapurna Base Camp trek is not for beginners and poses unique challenges due to its lack of acclimatisation days. The total distance of this short ABC trek is about 55 km, excluding the drive. To mitigate altitude sickness, it's essential to walk slowly, drink plenty of water, and be mindful of your body's response. The trek's remote trails require daily walks of 6-7 hours, demanding physical endurance and preparation. Consider the standard 7-day ABC trek itinerary or ask the trek to include Poon Hill, which allows for acclimatisation.

Essential Information

Meals & Dietary Options

  • Dietary Preferences: Gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options are readily available along the trail. Please inform us in advance of any specific dietary requirements.
  • Freshness & Meat Policy: Fresh meat is difficult to store at higher altitudes; therefore, eating meat on the trail is not recommended. Note: Beyond Sinuwa, serving or selling meat items is strictly prohibited by local conservation rules.

Travel Insurance

  • Mandatory Coverage: Comprehensive travel insurance is strictly required for all trekkers. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking, emergency medical expenses, and helicopter evacuation up to 5,000 meters.
  • Recommended Providers: We maintain a curated list of reliable travel insurance providers based on feedback from our past trekkers to help you choose the right policy.

Accommodation & Peak Season Flexibility

  • High Season Demand: Trails and teahouses get extremely busy during peak trekking seasons (spring & autumn).
  • Limited Teahouses: Facilities are limited past the Himalaya. For last-minute bookings or high-occupancy periods, room sharing may be required. Remaining flexible and adaptable ensures a smoother experience for everyone.

Express 5-Day ABC Trek (Kathmandu to Kathmandu Option)

  • Same-Day Fly & Start: You can take an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara on Day 1 and immediately join the trek.
  • Return Logistics: For fit and experienced trekkers, catching a late-evening flight back to Kathmandu on Day 5 is possible upon returning to Pokhara.
  • Important Recommendation: If you have an international connecting flight, we strongly advise adding at least 1 buffer day in your schedule to account for potential weather delays or flight cancellations in Pokhara.

ABC Trek Preparation

  • Physical Training: Start training at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip. Focus on cardiovascular and endurance exercises such as stair climbing, cycling, swimming, and long daily walks. Practice hiking with a small daypack weighing 3–5 kg to build endurance for daily 6 to 8-hour walks.
  • Breathing & Mental Fitness: Practicing yoga, deep breathing techniques, and leg-strengthening exercises helps build mental stamina and oxygen efficiency at higher elevations.
  • Health Check & Routine: Maintain a balanced diet, prioritize consistent sleep before departure, and consult your doctor if you have pre-existing medical conditions or concerns regarding altitude adjustment.

Flight & Domestic Transportation Services

  • Seamless Flight Booking: Rugged Trails Nepal provides direct booking for domestic flight tickets between Kathmandu and Pokhara.
  • Hassle-Free Changes: Booking domestic flights directly through us allows for quick, stress-free assistance if you need to adjust or reschedule your flight details due to last-minute plan changes or weather updates.
